The Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center has hosted 4-H Camp since the 1920s. Countless numbers have been affected by the programs and activities that 4-H Camp has provided -- from the generations of families that attended throughout the years to 5,000+ youth who will attend this year’s summer camp. 4-H Camp continues to teach youth the value of friendship and allows them to experience firsthand the diverse dynamics of hands-on educational programs through their camping experience. By interacting with their peers, these youth develop life skills such as leadership, citizenship, problem solving, goal setting and teamwork.
In 2007, Grant Walker celebrated 85 years of serving the youth of Louisiana. The facility remains a monument to generosity of the employees and friends of 4-H who worked so hard to leave a legacy for future generations. The Louisiana 4-H Foundation is embarking a capital campaign to make improvements to Grant Walker. Our goal is by the 100th birthday of Grant Walker, the money that is raised will make it the best 4-H Camp in the southern United States.
By July 2007, the following projects were completed with a combination of private and state funding:
-
Paved driveway throughout the campground
-
New bathhouse adjacent to the swimming pool
-
Improved air conditioning in all of the camper cabins
-
Renovated cabins for faculty and staff
-
New flooring for the nurse station/first-aid room
-
Cyber café with 20 computers for youth to learn Internet safety
