Operation: Military Kids Goes Summer Camp Crazy!
Louisiana Operation: Military Kids is hosting a series of camps for geographically dispersed military children and youth across Louisiana between April 4 and September 30. This is all thanks to the 2009 Operation: Military Kids Camp Initiative Grant from the U.S. Army and administered through the LSU AgCenter's 4-H Youth Development Office.
All of the planned camps will involve the OMK state and national partners — the American Red Cross, the Joint Family Support and Assistance Team, Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion and ICARE just to name a few — and will be held in several different areas of the state to best accommodate the more than 26,000 military children and youth in Louisiana.
Several different types of camps are being held to fit the needs and wants of our military families —day camps, 3-day camps, week-long camps, weekend camps, family camps, youth camps and camps for all ages and all interests. Some of the camps for this spring, summer and early fall included a day at the LSU AgCenter’s Dairy farm, horseback riding at Judson Baptist Retreat Center and a day at the 145th Anniversary celebration at the Battle of Mansfield. Camps heading your way are regional babysitter training camps with the Red Cross, a special Military Track at 4-H U’s Clover College, OMK BSA Survivor Camp at Avondale Scout Reservation, Clinton, La., and a Military Kids Marsh Maneuvers at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge.
Registering for these camps is easy! Just contact your Family Readiness Group Leader, the Child and Youth Services contact for your branch of service or your local parish LSU AgCenter 4-H agent for more information.
