Caldwell 4-H'ers Bridging the Gap with Literacy

The Caldwell Parish 4-H Junior Leader Club began their service learning project, “Bridging the Gap with Literacy,” in October 2007. This program includes a joint effort with the Haven Nursing Center. The junior leaders meet monthly at the nursing home. There, they have the option to teach a character education lesson to students in Kindergarten – 2nd grades or play games with some of the residents. Each month the junior leaders teach a pillar of character to the younger children. Residents from the nursing home watch the lessons and interact with the younger children and junior leaders. While the lesson is taking place, other junior leaders are playing games with residents and interacting with them. The junior leaders are experiencing a sense of belonging and utilizing their leadership skills by working together to lead these different activities. The younger students are learning about good character and mastering this concept. Additionally, all of the youth are given the chance to interact with individuals from an older generation and are developing relationships with these residents.
