Twenty teens, numerous adults and over 100 elementary students are participating in developing the first litter prevention program for Cameron Parish. Led by the Cameron Parish Jr. Leader Club, the program goals are to: 1) increase public awareness, through education, that littering is a serious problem that carries serious consequences affecting the environment, economy and personal health, and 2) unite the community in taking pride in the natural beauty and resources of Cameron Parish. Steps in achieving these goals began with research concerning who litters, why they litter, the effects of littering and what programs have worked in other small rural communities. The Jr. Leaders then developed and delivered an educational program to elementary students across the Cameron Parish, establishing littering as a local and nationwide problem. Elementary students created drawings to be used in an anti-litter calendar as part of the parishwide campaign. The Jr. Leader Club will present a proposal to the Cameron Parish Police Jury for the parish’s campaign later this month.
