Fifty percent of the Concordia Parish 4-H clubs contributed to the Concordia Animal Welfare Shelter by donating needed items to help with the operation of the facility. The idea to support CAWS came about during breakout sessions at our Parish 4-H Advisory Council Meeting. Youth and adults agreed it would be an opportunity that could involve all 4-H'ers. The shelter was contacted and provided a list of items that the shelter needed to continue operating. Each month, an item was listed in the parish 4-H newsletter for the youth to bring the following month. 4-H leaders provided boxes for the 4-H youth to place collected items. Most of the items collected have been through 4-H club projects, but some have come from members within a club. The parish 4-H teen leadership club also helped with the delivery of the items to the parish shelter. This service learning project has provided our 4-H youth with a reason to give back to their community and has taught them how helping others can provide them with a feeling of accomplishment. In the reflection process, members discussed the importance of being a responsible pet owner in and effort to help prevent animals from being placed in crowded shelters.
