East Feliciana 4-H'ers Help Low-Income Elderly

In keeping with an initial parish needs assessment made by adult leaders and youth in 2006, the East Feliciana 4-H program continues its service-learning endeavors in the areas of safety, housing, low incomes and the elderly and individuals requiring long-term care.

During 2007-2008, Clinton High School (CHS) and East Feliciana Community 4-H Club members and their adult leaders planned and conducted three service-learning activities: one related to low-income housing and two related to the elderly and long-term care individuals. The low-income housing activity engaged eight Clinton High 4-H members and two adult leaders in a Habitat for Humanity project near St. Francisville in October 2007. Supervisors of the project assigned one day to the CHS group, during which the group provided refreshments to all of the Habitat volunteers. Two or three members of the CHS group actually helped in finishing tasks in and around the Habitat home. In reflection of the service, the CHS group learned more about Habitat for Humanity, its purpose and goals in providing family households with the opportunity to have and own their own house.

The two East Feliciana service-learning activities related to the elderly and long-term care individuals involved collaboration with Grace Nursing Home and Rehab Center, a local nursing home. In November 2007, a 4-H pet show at Grace involved six members of the East Feliciana Community Club (EFCC). Although the pet show was publicized as a parishwide event, planning and conduct of the activity was carried out by two members of the CHS 4-H Club. Following the pet show, CHS and EFCC Club members and their families visited with Grace residents. During a club meeting In March 2008, CHS club members voted to make a return visit to Grace. On April 26, four CHS members visited Grace and talked with and took photos with many of the Grace residents. In reflection of the visits to Grace, 4-H members and their families were made more aware of the need for social contact and interaction with the elderly and individuals requiring long-term care.
