As a direct result of the parish advisory process, clientele indicated literacy awareness was an issue in the parish and should be addressed as a priority. Therefore, literacy was selected as the focus for the year in Iberville Parish and implemented through 4-H club programming, after-school enrichment and parish workshops. In Iberville Parish, reading comprehension was incorporated in the after-school programs where junior leader youth read to participants, as well as encouraged participants to read beyond the classroom. The comprehension aspect was also addressed by providing worksheets and activities related to selected stories. This activity involved over 15 junior leaders teaching and guiding over 200 youth. Also, during each of the 4-H workshops, a literacy component of some sort was incorporated. During 4-H club meetings involving over 500 participants, youth were asked to read stories aloud and provide question-and-answer feedback. 4-H members completed worksheets focusing on analogies, reading comprehension, sentence completion, anagrams, creative thinking and utilizing overworked words. As a whole, the project involved and served over 700 youth with over 150 hours of service related to literacy. Several of our larger events such as Achievement Day and the Centennial Celebration are still to come, and plans are in the works to incorporate our literacy focus into each of those events.
