LaSalle Parish 4-H Members Build Blue Bird Houses

Many people enjoy watching bluebirds in addition to the fact that bluebirds help in the control of mosquitoes. In a collaborative effort between LaSalle 4-H, the LaSalle Soil and Water Conservation District, local businesses, parent volunteers and Master Gardeners in the Busy Bee Garden Club, 36 bluebird houses have been constructed and placed around businesses, nursing homes and schools in LaSalle Parish. The LSWCD contacted businesses and was successful in getting tools and materials donated to build the birdhouses. A volunteer cut the wood into kits, which were assembled by 10 4-H Junior Leaders and club members. The birdhouses were placed at businesses and other public places by the Busy Bee Garden Club volunteers.

This project provided a positive influence to youth and adults of the importance of volunteering and what can be accomplished when groups collaborate and work together to improve their communities. The project involved about 40 hours of community service.
