The Lafourche Parish Junior Leaders service-learning project for 2007-2008 is Junior Leaders “Go Green.” The objectives for the project are:

1. Teach youth to be responsible caretakers of the planet.

2. Heighten their community awareness of and participation in environmentally responsible behavior.

3. Create an interest in establishing standards and procedures for environmentally responsible practices.

The Junior Leaders are recycling items such as cell phones and video tapes and DVDs, thereby shrinking landfill space and conserving energy. The cell phones were sold to a recycling company, and the money was used to have a beach sweep. The videos and DVDs were collected and donated to a local children’s hospital.

The Junior Leader’s also partnered with The Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary Program and presented an interactive children’s area in which the children did fish printing at the Fete de’ Ecologie, a community awareness program in Lafourche Parish.

Lafourche Parish School Board provided a bus and a local oil field company provided supplies to conduct a beach sweep at Fourchon Beach on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Many bags of trash were collected to help eliminate some of the waste that accumulated on the beach.

The Youth Wetlands Program provided 500 trees to the club. Junior Leaders received these trees and are now in the process of planting, taking pictures and writing about their experiences.
