Madison Parish 4-H'ers Reading to the Heart

The Reading to the Heart project is a literacy-based, character development program that focuses on providing an after-school reading challenge to promote a literacy-rich environment and promises to be a fun, exciting journey for all participants. Youth will be provided with free books and engage in motivational reading activities that illustrate real-life teaching, valuable character traits and behavior necessary for fulfilling, contributing lives. Conducted through after-school tutorial classes with the support of the Madison Parish School Board, community Literacy Council members, classroom teachers, parents and 4-H teen mentors, students are encouraged to read 40 minutes each day. Utilizing Leap Frog leap pad technology, books, magazines and newspapers, students will participate in interactive learning experiences such as role playing, educational games and computer-generated activities as well as develop related arts and crafts or service-learning projects. 4-H teen mentors will gain knowledge and experience through training and job-shadowing with professional educators while working in small groups and one-on-one with youth participants. In addition, parent volunteers will provide encouragement at home by participating in take-home activities, reading activities and special events.
