2008 Assumption Parish Service-Learning Project

Toys for Tots

They are members of the Labadieville Middle School 4-H Club. Every Christmas they help the Marine Corps Reserve collect Toys for Tots. This is no street corner fundraiser. All the toys come from the students themselves -- brand new, bought and paid for.

Student Kayla Blanchard says, "We're here to pack the toys for the children who don't have toys because we want to make sure that everybody, even the people that can't afford it, has a brighter Christmas than they wished for."

It may be a cheery Christmas for most, but with the ailing economy and after the hurricane, Toys for Tots needs help.

"Collections are a little off right now," says Bill Goessl of the Marine Corps League, "So we're asking people to come out and look for the toy boxes and put some toys in the box because the need is going to be greater than normal this year."

How about the Labadieville kids?

"This is awesome!" says Bill. "These 4-H kids getting out and taking this on as a school project -- this is awesome."

How does it make you feel to be able to help so many kids?

Student Alexis Cancienne says, "It makes me feel good.... It makes me feel happy that everybody gets to have a good Christmas like everybody else."

Head, Heart, Hands and Health -- those are the four H's. In Labadieville it's all Heart at Christmas.
