Citizenship Focus 2008-09

In an effort to educate youth about our country’s democratic process, the Vermilion Parish 4-H Jr. Leaders selected Citizenship as the club’s Service Learning Project focus for the 2008-09 school year. The fact that the presidential election was held this fall made for perfect timing of such a selection and allowed for service-related experiences. Club members conducted voter registration drives and “get out the vote” campaigns. They also toured the parish courthouse and heard from local elected officials. Through club meeting formats, they received instruction on political propaganda and the party system. The year-long project will culminate in the spring with an educational trip to Washington, D.C., for 50 club members.
