Concordia Parish 4-H Service-Learning Project: Soup Kitchen

[Image: concordia]Concordia Parish 4-H'ers participated in the soup kitchen with these goals in mind: to teach the youth how to help the less fortunate and to provide items to the local soup kitchen that were needed.

The youth worked with the adult volunteers to collect and separate the donated items. Several youth visited the soup kitchen when delivering the items to view and get an understanding of what a soup kitchen entails. The officers and adult volunteers met at the beginning of the year to determine what was needed in the community and to decide on one particular service project on which to work. They then developed committees, met and decided what their focus was going to be. The youth volunteered for committees and began their work.

Youth collected a different food item that was needed by the soup kitchen each month (corn, beans, dried beans, etc.). They separated food items and brought them to the soup kitchen. Youth made table favors, delivered foods and decorated the soup kitchen for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine's Day. They also had a penny war between the girls and boys and donated money to soup kitchen.

The 4-H'ers involved the whole school in the service activities. The soup kitchen (STEW POT) helped with the items needed. A pizza party was given at the end of the year for all those who participated, and an ice cream party was given to the winners of the penny war. As reflection, the 4-H'ers were asked questions about their experiences involving the soup kitchen, such as: How did you feel about helping others and what were your feelings after visiting the soup kitchen? This project lasted 12 hours and reached 85 people as of 5/4/2009.
