Wetlands Restoration

4-H'ers from Tangipahoa Parish participated in the Wetlands Restoration service-learning project. The goals of this project were to teach 4-H members the value of wetlands restoration, how to do it and to restore a wetlands area. 4-H members potted wetland plants and grew them out at schools and then planted them in a wetland area with adult leaders, 4-H agents, Sea Grant agents and AWCC members. An area at the parish landfill needed to be planted with wetland vegetation to prevent erosion and the contamination for the Tickfaw River. The service experience was growing wetland plants and planting them. The celebration consisted of hot dogs and hamburgers after the planting as a celebration for the success of the project. After reflection, it was decided to repeat this project next year. This project lasted 900 hours and reached 90 people as of 8/15/2009.
