African-American Inventors Curriculum

The African-American Inventors Curriculum was designed by a team of educators from the Ohio State University Extension Service to encourage 4th- through 8th-grade youth to: Develop creative and critical thinking skills, to view themselves as inventors and problem-solvers; to increase youth's awareness of African-American history and cultural awareness; and to comprehend and apply scientific principles in everyday life. George Washington Carver is featured with other African-American inventors. The fun, hands-on activities encourage divergent and critical thinking, creativity and motivation. The 13 lessons focus on careers and consist of: Objectives, measurable outcomes, suggested timeframe, grade levels, materials/supplies needed, vocabulary, introductory activities, biographical sketch, unit background information, experiential activities, suggested evaluation techniques, reading references and “digging deeper” exercises.
