A total of 7 hours of interactive and fun presentations on these topics are available during 4-H University on June 17-20, 2008. Presenters will include LSU faculty, LSU AgCenter faculty and special guests from around the state. It’s an opportunity to bring programs back to your home parish and communities. Camp Counselor Always wanted to be a camp counselor but afraid that it might be as intimidating as putting together a 2,500-piece JIGSAW puzzle? Don't fret - when you complete this training you will feel like you just won BLACKOUT in a BINGO tournament. This training will help develop teamwork skills so you can avoid any FAMILY FEUDS and don't have to go it SOLITAIRE. Serving as a counselor is like working with the panel of HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, so you will also pursue some TRIVIA enabling you to better interact with the campers, your peers and adults. Developing your communication skills in this session will help you to BRIDGE generation gaps and avoid any DOMINO effects. By completing this training, your chances of being a camp counselor will not be in JEOPARDY, and you can CHECKER it off on your camp counselor application form. So, attend this training and spin the big WHEEL to good FORTUNE.
Dramatic Arts: The World's A Stage - Bringing Out the Actor in YOUth! As Shakespeare said, "All the world is a stage." Through the workshop, you will reflect on this idea and discover ways to translate your everyday life to a wide variety of dramatic performances. This session is for anyone who wants to learn about acting and theater arts. By actively engaging in a series of acting experiences, participants will get "hands-on" experiences on how to act as well as what venues are available to express oneself. The class will focus on performance-oriented movement, pantomime, voice, improvisation and other related areas, with an emphasis on practical scene and monologue work.
Exploring The World of Sports Led by members of the LSU Athletic Department representing football, basketball, volleyball and track. The world of sports is a huge business and a major impact on universities across the country. This is an opportunity to learn about the behind-the-scenes management of athletics on the LSU campus. Exercise, nutrition and the overall health of an athlete are extremely important in the success of an athletic team. Learn about the details of traveling to LSU sporting events, including meals, class schedules, training and the amount of time involved in preparing for a game. You will leave the session with an understanding of expectations of a college student-athlete. There also will be an opportunity to meet college athletes during the sessions.
Forensics: A Clue and A Crime If you like the television shows like CSI, you'll want to sign up for this workshop. Join the Forensics Frenzy! This Clover College workshop encourages youth to use their investigative and problem-solving skills to solve a crime. It will emphasize the methods of observing, gathering and analyzing physical evidence to solve mysteries. Forensic science is a significant part of solving crimes and maintaining justice. While there are hundreds of methods currently used in forensic laboratories, advances in science and technology will change the way we are able to interpret physical evidence.
Make Your Health Rock! Participants will learn how Health Rocks! through interactive programs that will test their healthy decision-making skills. A supermarket sweep will test newly gained consumer food judging skills in a visit to a local market. To showcase their knowledge, these Media Smart Youth will develop unique marketing tools to promote their parish plans. Guest appearances by 4-H celebrities will add the finishing touch to the session.
Operation Military Kids Join us for AT in your BDUs or FDUs, have fun at your APFT, eat your MREs and get some OTJ about OMK. Learn more about Operation: Military Kids, a program that serves the children of the military. OMK Clover College participants will sharpen their public speaking and personal communication skills and leave with the knowledge and resources to plan seminars, camps and events that increase community awareness of military children and families. Through our SOMK Training, you will be equipped with the right tools to go out in your community and have some fun while educating others. Join us and make a difference!
Sportsman's Paradise The "Sportsman's Paradise" track will give participants an opportunity to learn about the bountiful environment of Louisiana and what it has to offer. Students will receive instruction on outdoor cooking, proper tent building procedures and outdoor first aide/safety. Participants also will learn about Louisiana's unique waterfowl population and have an understanding of the types of waterfowl and their characteristics. Participants will have the opportunity to apply for a $250 grant that will support their programming efforts back in their parish.
Team+Building What's the number-one complaint most team members voice? "We need to communicate better!" This Clover College session is fun; it's frustrating,\; it's totally experiential; it's filled with laughter, and it's the perfect activity to help identify the barriers that are in the way of effective communication in your "real world" and how they can be eliminated. Come prepared to work with your team and to solve complex problems together while confronted with limited resources, limited communication and time constraints. It will be a real test of working together to reach a common goal and maintain a positive attitude and open communication.
