A total of 7 hours of interactive and fun presentations on these topics are available during 4-H University on June 23-26, 2009. Presenters will include LSU faculty, LSU AgCenter faculty and special guests from around the state. It’s an opportunity to bring programs back to your home parish and communities. Are You Ready for College? Remember the big changes in your life? They are often exciting, scary, lonely, and fun all wrapped up together. Going to college are all of those things and more! Find out how to best be prepared for your transition into college. This workshop has four areas of emphasis: Academics, Finances, Relationships, and Healthy Choices.
Citizenship Louisiana Focus CLF @ 4‐H U is an educational and challenging activity that enables you to act as Senator for a Day as you explore community and youth issues through research and group discussions. This workshop is for you if you like debates and you are interested in how laws are made. Experience government as you take part in a democratic process where you and your group write a bill and then engage in public debate to get your bill passed in a Mock Senate Hearing at the Old State Capitol. Also, come and enjoy the ‘friendly competition’ of the CLF Scavenger Hunt and the Louisiana Trivia games.
Creative Forces: Youth Educational Theater Corps Creative Forces use skills as actors, comics, poets, singers and teachers to educate others about the vital issues of the community. Creative Forces’ motto, “Information + Imagination = Knowledge” is a challenge and an invitation to all to go beyond the mere transmission of facts and engage young people as critical thinkers and creative leaders in the transformation of society.
Exploring the World of Sports Led by members of the LSU Athletic Department representing football, basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics. The world of sports is a huge business and a major impact on universities across the country. This is an opportunity to learn about the behind the scenes management of athletics on the LSU campus. Exercise, nutrition, and the overall health of an athlete are extremely important in the success of an athletic team. Learn about the details of traveling to LSU sporting events, academics for athletes, and behind the scenes in technology for sports. You will leave the session with an understanding of expectations of a college student athlete. There also will be an opportunity to meet college athletes during the sessions.
Forensics: The First 48 Back for the second year, this clover college workshop will offer a Forensics Frenzy. The first forty‐eight hours of an investigation are key in determining the answers to the Who? What? When? Where? How? Time is very valuable and so is the information that will be provided in this session. Youth will use their investigative and problemsolving skills to solve a mock crime scene. Several detective agencies will offer opportunities to learn the methods of observing, gathering and analyzing physical evidence to solve mysteries. This hands‐on session doesn’t stop there. Come take part in a virtual visit to a local morgue and discover the secrets of the underworld. If that’s not enough, have you ever wondered how long it takes for a body to decompose? Or maybe you’ve been interested in body composition and bone structure. Well, take a peek in our Forensics Anthropology corner. This session will offer these opportunities and so much more.
Make Your Health Rock! Participants will learn how Health Rocks! through interactive programs that will test theirhealthy decisionmaking skills. To showcase their knowledge, these Media Smart Youth will develop unique marketing tools to promote their parish plans.
Operation: Military Kids Join us for AT in your BDUs or FDUs, have fun at your APFT, eat your MREs and get some OTJ about OMK. Learn more about Operation: Military Kids, a program that serves the children of the military. Learn more about military culture and the needs of military families while participating in fun activities and service learning. OMK Clover College participants will sharpen their public speaking and personal communication skills, and leave with the knowledge and resources to plan seminars, camps and events that increase community awareness of military children and families. Through Speak Out for Military Kids Training, participants will be equipped with the right tools to go out in their community and have some fun while educating others. Join us and make a difference!
Robotics: Our Challenge - Your Solution! Are you interested in robotics? Love a good puzzle? This workshop, led by the LSU Robotics department, will let you work as a team to build a SumoBot. The team will encounter challenges similar to those faced by scientists and engineers. Exposure to these fields of science and related professionals will open your team’s eyes to future career choices. Participants will build a SumoBot, tour a robotics engineering facility and pair off in SumoBot competition in this fun, fast‐paced, workshop.
Louisiana’s Paradise Louisiana’s Paradise will give participants an opportunity to learn about the bountiful environment of Louisiana and what it has to offer. Students will receive instruction on outdoor cooking, the quality of our marsh land, and how pollutants directly and indirectly affect, us as humans. Participants also will learn about Louisiana's unique waterfowl population and have an understanding of the types of waterfowl and their characteristics. The participants will also be able to join in for a fun filled trip to explore Louisiana’s Wetlands and learn about our Alligator industry.
