ABL Policy Statement

1. General Organization and Operating Procedures

Purpose of ABL: Provide facilities and expertise for research and educational activities that will benefit the economy and citizens of Louisiana.

  • ABL headed by coordinator who is responsible for overall ABL program. Coordinator answers to director of the LAES.
  • Coordinator and Steering Committee together determine research activities and policies of ABL.
  • Space and equipment at the ABL facility in Wilson Hall may be made available to qualified faculty and start-up biotechnology companies for specified periods of time.
  • Before initiating research in ABL, researchers will provide the coordinator with short description of research goals, general lab procedures and time-frame for experiments.
  • Full-time staff members housed in ABL, assistant professor-research (APR) and research associate (RA), will provide technical assistance and advice to researchers. Actual laboratory work will be completed by individual researchers.
  • All researchers using ABL facilities and equipment must read, agree by signature, and abide by organization and operating procedures described in this policy statement.
2. Use of Laboratories

  • ABL researchers (members of Steering Committee) will have first priority for use of labs.
  • Use of ABL labs by non-LSU researchers and private entities will be determined by coordinator and Steering Committee on a case-by-case basis.
  • Use of ABL labs by non-LSU researchers and private entities will be described in written document or contract. Terms of contract to be determined by coordinator and LAES Director.
  • Each researcher must agree to observe standard laboratory rules regarding safety and cleanliness.
  • Time of occupation of labs reviewed yearly by coordinator and APR.
  • No researcher or private business entity will have permanent or long-term use of ABL labs, rooms or offices.
3. Use of ABL Equipment

  • APR and RA responsible for use and maintenance of ABL lab equipment.
  • APR and Coordinator will determine who will use ABL equipment.
  • All researchers must make request and receive training from APR before using ABL equipment.
  • Researchers can lose privilege of using ABL equipment if equipment is not used properly or abused or destroyed.
