WORK LOCATION: Sugar Research Station, LSU AgCenter, St. Gabriel, Louisiana.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Full-time 12 month, tenure-track position with a 100% research appointment. The LSU AgCenter seeks an outstanding scientist for the position of Assistant/Associate/Professor of sugarcane breeding/agronomy at the Sugar Research Station. The successful candidate will be a member of the LSU AgCenter’s multidiscipline sugarcane variety development program. Program members have respective responsibilities in crossing, selection, and variety testing. Although the incumbent will have primary responsibility for early stage selection, he/she will become familiar with all aspects of the program. These early stages include year’s two through five of the twelve-year process leading to the eventual release of new sugarcane varieties for the Louisiana sugarcane industry. The individual will also work closely with the LSU AgCenter pathologist, entomologist, and molecular breeder, and variety development partners in the USDA-ARS and the American Sugar Cane League. The person in this position should also develop strong international ties with other sugarcane breeding programs. Other duties include conducting breeding and agronomic research to improve breeding program practices and to maximize the utilization of new sugarcane varieties. He/she will be required to document and publish results from research in refereed journals and other appropriate scientific outlets and seek extramural funds. He/she will also participate in professional and technical meetings and other outreach as is necessary to inform producers, industry personnel, and other research scientists of project activities and findings.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in plant breeding, agronomy, or other agricultural-related discipline. Demonstrated accomplishment in conducting mission-oriented research and providing leadership in team oriented research activities is essential. Experience in sugarcane variety development is desirable.
