Academic Programs Abroad

It's both professionally and personally enriching to exchange to another country, and it's easier than ever to go on an international exchange. Louisiana State University offers students to choose among universities in 45 countries.

Academic Programs Abroad (APA) offers summer study programs as well as semester or year-long programs, both national and international.

Summer Programs

Every year during the summer (and sometimes spring intercession), LSU faculty lead several programs abroad. While there are staples, such as LSU in Germany, LSU in Ireland, LSU in London and LSU in Paris, several programs change yearly. In the summer of 2009, more than 350 students studied abroad through one of LSU's 17 programs. Please visit the Summer Programs page to see where students went and check back in October 2009 for a list and details on summer 2010 programs.

International Exchange

LSU belongs to International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a consortium of schools around the globe. Additionally, LSU has several direct agreements with particular international universities. These agreements are called bilateral agreements. For a list of all of the schools LSU is affiliated with either through ISEP or bilateral agreements, please visit the Affiliated Programs page.

National Exchange

"San Francisco isn't in the same country as Lakeside [Wisconsin] any more than New Orleans is in the same country as New York or Miami is in the same country as Minneapolis." — Neil Gaiman, American Gods

LSU is a member of the National Student Exchange, or NSE, a consortium of more than 180 schools in the United States, her territories (Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and even Canada.

Students go on national exchanges for all types of reasons:

  • To take courses not available on their home campuses
  • To enhance personal growth and independence
  • To spend time in a different region
  • To immerse themselves in diverse cultural settings
  • To investigate graduate and professional schools
  • To explore career options
  • To prepare for international exchange

To investigate whether an international exchange is the right option for you, come to an Academic Programs Abroad interest meeting. Dates, times and locations can be found on our calendar and on the interest meetings page.
