Areas of Specialization/Research
Dr. Graham’s current project is LAB 03925, Breeding, Cultural Management, and Post-Harvest Physiology of Pecan. This is a cooperative project with entomology and pathology researchers at the LSU AgCenter's Pecan Research and Extension Station in Shreveport, La. Primary research is conducted on cultural management (rootstocks, fertilization, propagation, etc.) with limited research conducted in breeding and nut phytochemicals. Areas of research include physiology, growth and development studies, and cultural methods (mechanical nut thinning, growth regulator sprays, etc.) related to improved production and pre- and post-harvest nut quality for processing and retail market. The purpose of this project is to make pecan production more profitable by developing and selecting better cultivars and by developing more efficient management strategies which reduce irregular bearing and maximize nut quality. Recently (2005), an orchard was established to evaluate current LSU pecan production recommendations for their economic feasibility. It is important to evaluate recommendations, from time to time, to make sure the university is providing growers with appropriate information to make pecan production a positive monetary investment. Dr. Graham is a member of the Graduate Faculty of Louisiana State University and can serve as a co-chair or member of graduate student advising committees.
