Louisiana farmers face Sept. 16 deadline for insurance waiver for disaster assistance

News Release Distributed 09/05/08

Louisiana agricultural producers who suffered crop damage from Hurricane Gustav need crop insurance or non-insured crop disaster assistance coverage to be eligible to participate in federal disaster assistance programs, according to LSU AgCenter agricultural economist Kurt Guidry.

“This insurance requirement was included in the 2008 Farm Bill. But the deadline for obtaining the insurance had already passed before the bill was finally signed into law,” Guidry said. “Therefore, farmers who did not have this coverage were given until Sept. 16 to obtain a waiver.”

Farmers need to get to their local U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) office before the deadline to obtain this waiver, Guidry said.

If they have questions, they can contact their local LSU AgCenter parish extension office, Guidry said.
