Volunteer Opportunity in New Orleans

AWCC Needs Volunteers to
Help Restore City Park, New Orleans

The America’s WETLAND Conservation Corps (AWCC) is looking for volunteers to help out any day next week to help plant thousands of marsh grass plants along a lake in City Park, New Orleans. City Park has recently dug a new lake and wetland area, and planting the grass along the shorelines will prevent erosion and help with the aesthetic appeal of the park.

History:

If you live near New Orleans, then you’ve likely been to City Park at least once in your life. City Park is the seventh most-visited city park in the entire United States. City Park in New Orleans is one of the few public parks that are majority funded by self-generated revenue and donations. The park offers a Botanical Garden, amusement park, Museum of Art and many other attractions.

After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, City Park has never been the same. Slowly, repairs have been made, but there are still many tasks to complete. Multiple projects in the park require additional volunteer hours in order to be completed before the end of the year.

Here are the Details:

  • When: Any day between May 11-15
  • Location: City Park Greenhouse
    • Directions: From I-10 take Exit 231A toward Metairie Rd./City Park. Continue onto City Park Ave. Take a left at Marconi Drive. Go under I-610 and take the first right onto Zachary Taylor Dr. Take the first right on Golf Dr. and go back under I-610. Cross the railroad tracks, and the greenhouse will be on the left.
  • Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (if you can’t stay the entire day, that is fine as well).
  • What to Bring: Clothes that can get muddy, sunscreen, hat, knee or hip boots (if you have them) and a snack.

We will provide some water and the necessary equipment.

Please sign up to volunteer with the AWCC Member Kyle Saari at (832) 655-5481.
