Past storms such as hurricanes Fran (1996), Ivan (2004), Charley (2004) and Katrina (2005) have shown the continued vulnerability of our foundations in coastal and near-coastal areas. Coastal foundations must withstand strong wind and flood events and should be functional after being possibly undermined by scour and erosion.
To help satisfy a need for wind- and flood-resistant residential foundation designs, FEMA 550, Recommended Residential Construction for the Gulf Coast, was developed and published in July 2006. The manual provides prescriptive foundation designs that building codes and standards do not cover very deeply.
The course will cover (1) the effect of natural hazards on coastal foundations; (2) the introduction and importance of building codes and standards; (3) regulatory requirements determining where and how buildings may be sited, designed and constructed; and (4) the introduction and use of FEMA 550.
Course participants will gain an appreciation of the need for prescriptive foundation design guidance, an understanding of how to use the guidance found in FEMA 550 and the benefits of using this guidance to design and regulate residential construction in the Gulf Coast area.
Most suited for engineers and local building officials involved in residential construction.
This workshop has been approved for CE credit by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors.
