Laws, Licenses and Permits

Since November 2005, home building and home restoration in Louisiana are subject to the provisions of the International Residential Code.

  • The code requires builders to obtain a building permit from local governments prior to beginning of the work.
  • The code requires local governments to inspect construction work at various stages of completion to ensure that the work complies with the code and follows the plans approved by the local government.
  • The code restricts certain kinds of work to licensed, registered or certified contractors.

In some cases, construction covered by Road Home awards may exceed the legal requirement.

Follow the links on the right side of this page to find out more about each of these requirements.
