Healthy and Eco-Friendly

Most of us are aware of the need to use our resources wisely. Much has been written about global warming, the cost and scarcity of energy, the rising cost of handling waste and the shortage of potable water.

We should also want to maintain a healthy indoor environment, one that is free of pollutants generated or aggravated by such things as combustion (the burning fuels for cooking, heating, etc.), mold growth caused by high humidity and excess use of pesticides. Building materials that contain toxins (lead, asbestos) or give off volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can pollute the indoor environment as well.

When planning, remodeling or constructing a house, we can make decisions and choices that positively address these issues. These decision can also result in reduced building and operating costs. For example:

  • Energy-efficient design elements can reduce pollution and operating cost for heating and cooling the home by 50% or more.
  • New plumbing systems offer sizable reductions in water usage.
