On June 6 , the Louisiana H.U.N.G.ER. (Help Under-nourished Neighbors Get Essential Resources) Coalition hosted the annual National Hunger Awareness Day conference to address the changing need for food assistance in Louisiana since the devastating impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Louisiana State University Agricultural Center was the sponsor this year. Other members of the Coalition included the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Forum 35, and Southern University Agricultural Center.
The theme for the conference was “Giving a Hand-Up: Hunger in Louisiana in a Post Katrina and Rita Environment.” Educators, federal, state, and community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and the local media were invited to join the public issues discussion of:
- Changes in hunger in Louisiana’s post disaster environment
- Ways to address hunger in Louisiana
- A call to action for leaders to help provide a “hand up”
The event also kicked off the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank’s 12th Annual “Check Out Hunger” Campaign. “Check Out Hunger” was one of the Food Bank’s major fundraisers held in conjunction with WAFB Channel 9, LA DOTD Federal Credit Union, and area grocery stores. The program was held from June 6 - July 16 and all proceeds went to feeding the hungry in the 11-parish service area.
