Pheidole: Big-Headed Ants

Identification: Big-headed ants are small to large ants (2-8mm) that appear to have many sizes. This species is easily distinguished by the major workers, which have very large heads, hence the name big-headed ants. The minor workers are slender, small, reddish ants. All the workers have one pair of spines on the back. (Pest Ants of Louisiana).

Biology: These ants are rarely found inside homes but can be found in the yard. They typically nest under stones, bark and logs, and in soil. If disturbed, they will relocate the colony quickly. They feed on a variety of items such as seeds, insects, grease, sweets and protein.

Treatment: Apply a proteinaceous granular or sweet liquid bait in areas to suppress these ants in areas where they are a problem. If necessary, dust soffits and attics with contact insecticides. Eliminate items that give ants access to the structure, and consider an insecticidal barrier treatment around the structure.
