Teaching Opportunities and Requirements

The Department of Animal Science places a priority on development of effective teaching skills by the graduate students. Graduate students have the opportunity to enhance their teaching skills by enrolling in Vocational Education 7205 "Teaching in Higher Education". This course will permit graduate students to prepare for their assignment as a teaching assistant in the Department of Animal Science. All candidates for a Master's degree are expected to assist in an undergraduate course for one semester. Candidates for a Ph.D. degree are required to assist in an undergraduate and/or a graduate course for two semesters during their training. Students should arrange their schedule so that they can meet this requirement after the first and prior to the last semester of their degree program. No student will be permitted to teach prior to certification of a proficiency in spoken English (applies only to new international non-English speaking graduate students). The graduate student will consult with his graduate advisor and subsequently petition the Chairman of the Department of Animal Science for assignment to an appropriate course in need of a graduate teaching assistant.
