Faculty Expectations of Doctor of Philosophy Graduates

Persons graduating with a PhD in Animal Science should have a more in depth understanding of those things listed above for the MS graduate. Moreover, PhD graduates are expected to be independently thinking scientists who are able to recognize problems, devise and execute complete research programs, and subsequently publish the results in appropriate outlets. Additional expectations of PhD graduates include:

  1. The ability to organize several phases of their job simultaneously. That is, whether in academia or in industry, scientists are generally required to teach, do research, serve on committees, serve the industry, etc., all at the same time. Performing well in one area only is often insufficient to gain tenure and(or) promotion.

  2. The ability to synthesize new concepts or theories within the realm of their research results

  3. The ability to prepare and submit competitive research proposals for external funding
