Personal Biography of Dr. Daniel A. Strickman
Dr. Daniel Strickman is the National Program Leader for Veterinary, Medical, and Urban Entomology, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

From 2003-2006, he served at a county, operational level as Vector Ecologist for Santa Clara County Vector Control District, San Jose, CA.

Dr. Strickman completed 22 years of military service (highest rank: Colonel, Medical Service Corps, US Army) as Chief, Department of Entomology, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He entered the military in 1981 as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and transferred to the Army in 1984.

Dr. Strickman served in Peace Corps in Paraguay from 1978 to 1980.

He received a Ph.D. in entomology in 1978, M.S. in 1976 from the University of Illinois, the late Dr. William Horsfall as adviser.

He graduated (B.A., biology) with Highest Honors (Valedictorian) from the University of California, Riverside, in 1974.

Dr. Strickman attended Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, 1971-1973 before transferring to UCR.

He has authored a total of 91 peer reviewed publications (42 as senior author), six book chapters, and one book (Insect Repellent: Principles, Methods, and Uses, co-editor).

His key career accomplishments include: Systematized larval movement of mosquitoes, providing a practical tool for field identification; Isolated drug resistant pathogen of scrub typhus (Orientia tsutsugamushI) and defined its characteristics in the laboratory; Discovered the effect of magnetic fields on mosquitoes; Revised the taxonomy of Culex stigmatosoma, the second-most abundant mosquito in California; Eradicated Aedes aegypti from a Thai village without the use of insecticides, eliminating dengue virus transmission; Led the military preventive medicine team during Operation Enduring Freedom, achieving the lowest rate of disease non-battle injury during any conflict in U.S. history; Eradicated an infestation of Aedes albopictus from
Santa Clara County, California.
