The Food Processing and Technology Pilot Plant, operated by the Department of Food Science, is dedicated to meat, poultry and seafood processing and packaging research.

The pilot plant supports teaching, research and extension activities in the food science area. Food science faculty and graduate students are engaged in multiple research projects in functional food, food engineering, food safety and innovative packaging. Many courses in our undergraduate and graduate programs use the pilot plant for demonstrations and for the students to gain real-world experience.

The equipment and facilities provide flexible custom processing and packaging of a variety of food commodities for food industries. Pilot plant equipment can provide simulation of industrial production to assess and evaluate product or process performance.
