Human Ecology - Extension Focus Areas

The School of Human Ecology's Extension Programs of the LSU AgCenter are charged with the mission of enhancing the lives of individuals and families, strengthening communities, and shaping the future of Louisiana through research-based educational outreach. The collective vision of our faculty is for a healthy Louisiana—physically, socially, emotionally, and financially.

One of the most critical problems our state faces is that of pervasive poverty. Louisiana continues to trail the rest of the South with a poverty rate of 20.3%—the second highest rate in the nation and the highest in the South. More than 27% of Louisiana’s children live in poverty. Faculty in Human Ecology (HUEC) are on the front lines providing educational outreach to the people of the state to address the critical issues of poverty.

We are currently focused on three major initiatives: Nutrition and Health; Family and Child Development; and Family Resource Management.

The family is the basic unit of society, and it must be preserved. Never has there been a greater need for the expertise of Human Ecology Extension faculty than right now in helping families create a better quality of life for them and their children.
