Welcome to Human Nutrition & Food

Welcome to the Division of Human Nutrition & Food. As a division within the School of Human Ecology at Louisiana State University, our students take courses both within the school and across departments of the wider campus. As a discipline in the School of Human Ecology, we take an integrated approach to the study of nutrition and food that includes how nutrition and food affect the well being and lives of individuals, families and populations, in addition to how nutrients are used by cells of the body.

The undergraduate curriculum includes courses in principles of food preparation and methods of preparation, food and culture, nutritional biochemistry, sports nutrition and medical nutrition therapy. Concentrations in the curriculum are designed for your career goals in Dietetics or Nutritional Sciences/Pre-Med.

The concentration in Dietetics is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) and prepares the student for an internship after graduation with the ultimate goal of preparing the student to take the registration exam given by the ADA as a route to becoming a Registered Dietitian (R.D.). The curriculum in Nutritional Sciences/ Pre-Med is designed to meet medical school and dental school prerequisites and/or graduate school requirements for advanced study in nutrition.

Students are encouraged to become engaged in our comprehensive and integrated education, research and service programs that reach individuals, families and the public. There is an opportunity for undergraduates to become involved and participate in any number of these scholarly programs that can give insight about how nutrition and food make a difference in the lives and well-being of citizens of Louisiana and beyond. For the student interested in exploring these opportunities, make an appointment to visit with one of our faculty to discuss opportunities. Graduate nutrition training is provided through a concentration in nutrition in the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy Programs in Human Ecology. Our Web site provides more information about our programs. Please look at what we can offer you.
