The tomato and its close relatives originated in a narrow, elongated, mountainous region of the Andes Mountains in Peru, Ecuador and Chile. They can be grown in almost any moderately well-drained soil. Tomatoes should be planted in the same bed or area only every third year to avoid frequently occurring diseases. Rotation with monocots such as corn is highly recommended.
Also, liming materials should be used to adjust the soil pH to or near 6.5 to provide the crop's calcium and magnesium requirements and avoid diseases influenced by high or low soil pH (Verticillium and Fusarium wilts, respectively).
