Ascension Parish teens work hard to serve as state leaders
Members of the 2009-2010 Louisiana 4-H state Food and Fitness Board, SET Board, Executive Board, Citizenship Board and Fashion Board were recently named at 4-H University held June 23-26, 2009, in Baton Rouge. These boards consist of teen 4-H members from across the state, and they will convene in July to make plans for the year.
The Food and Fitness board will learn more about healthy living -- focusing on nutrition and fitness as well as an emphasis on leadership development and community involvement. Each year this state board plans a statewide camp for elementary members and adult leaders. Beyond the camp, board members are active in regional and parish events, and some serve as teen leaders for parish-based boards and nutrition project clubs. Whitney Bell and Brittany Babineaux will serve on the State Food and Fitness Board with Kayla Haydel, the board's newest advisor.
The Louisiana State 4-H Executive Board consists of the state 4-H officers, a minimum of 14 regional representatives who are elected by their 4-H peers, and eight National Conference Delegates. The board’s structure allows for youth to become involved in the decision-making process while also allowing for successful youth-adult partnerships. These partnerships create a team atmosphere and prove that being a team player is not limited by one’s age. The primary goal of the Executive Committee is to oversee the Louisiana 4-H Constitution and not only plan but also conduct statewide events. This includes 4-H University, Junior Leadership Conference and Challenge Camp. Arielle Sutton and Brittany Babineaux will be serving on the Executive Committee for the 2009-2010 year. Arielle will serve as a regional representative, and Brittany will serve as the Secretary/Treasurer.
The Citizenship Board will be focused on community service-learning with support for programming in the area of character development, citizenship and Operation Military Kids. The primary objectives of the board are serving and learning about their community, developing leadership skills, building character and helping others. Katie DeVeer is serving on the new Citizenship Board.
The Science, Engineering and Technology Board is a youth leadership opportunity. Members of the SET board serve to help promote projects that are SET-related, develop and promote educational programs for Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology camp, provide technical assistance at 4-H events and promote parish SET teams. Joy Semien is serving as the Senior LOST Camp Coordinator for the board.
Congratulations to all of the new board members from Ascension Parish. For information on participating in a state leadership opportunity visit the 4-H Web site or contact Kayla Haydel or Jamie Templet.
