2009 Farmers Market - 4-H'ers Bathing Pets

The Avoyelles Parish 4-H Service Learning Project; Pets and People, was carried out at the Farmers Market in Marksville three weekends in a row this summer.

4-H youth invited the public to bring their pets for a pet bath/dip.  The bath took care of insects and pests such as lice, fleas, and ticks.  Over a three Saturday period approximately 120 animals were bathed (including one cat).

4-H'ers learned and taught many things during this service learning project.  For starters, they taught the proper way to give an animal a bath under the direction of a local vet from the Mansura area.  Proper pet care is a 4-H project, and so many of the youth were familiar with basic grooming and were prepared to use their elbow grease to work hard on the animals.
