Parenting Classes with the Southern University Ag Center

[Image: Debra Jackson]My name is Debra Jackson and I am a parent educator employed by the Southern University's Ag Center.  We are contracted by the Louisiana Office of Family Services to supply their clients with parenting classes.  We meet for classes every Tuesday in Rapides Parish at the Martin Center and every Wednesday in Avoyelles Parish at LSU/SU Extension Center.  The clients must complete six classes before they can graduate.  When graduates complete the program, they are given certificates and a bag of gifts from the SU Ag Center.

My purpose is to enlighten young women about the importance of being good nurturers to their children -- which could be the most important part a parent plays in a child's life.  Also, there is a need to share information about the importance of building good self-esteem and a positive self-concept in their children's early stages of development.

Some of the topics that we discuss are "Nurture your Baby," "Your Family's Budget," "Understanding your Baby's Development," "Nutrition for Children" and "Communication," just to name a few.

For more information, please feel free to contact me at the LSU AgCenter and SU Ag Center offices at (318) 767-3968.

Each quarter a parenting newsletter is provided to give quick help skills to parents and prospective parents.  These newsletters can be accessed below.
