Character Really Does Count

Character is more than just words and feelings. Character is about all of our actions and should be a very important part of our everyday life. A person of good character must live it as well as say that they are a person of good character. We all realize that it is not easy to exhibit good character traits all the time, but we should always strive to be the best person possible. As we think about character, there are six basic pillars of character that cover all aspects of our lives. Through our actions, many times we can show our quality of character in each of the six (6) pillars of character, which are: Responsibility, Respect, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. You may think, what does this have to do with my 4-H projects? Well your 4-H projects are basically just like anything else that you do or have in your life. You can and should exhibit the same six pillars of character in all of your 4-H projects and activities as you do in any other activity in life. By joining 4-H you will be accepting the responsibility to do what is required to complete the projects and to learn to respect your fellow 4-H members/students and adult leaders who will be working with the club. In turn, they will respect you. Also in 4-H, you will be entrusted with different leadership jobs, and you will learn how important it is to keep your word and to be counted on to be at activities on time. Through 4-H and all the activities that are offered, you will learn how to like yourself and care about your fellow 4-Hers/students and learn that it is important to be a fair and giving person. Everything that you will be doing in 4-H will help to prepare you to be the best citizen possible.

There will be a "Pet Parade" in the livestock barn's show ring, therefore, ALL ANIMALS MUST BE ON A LEASH OR IN A CAGE AND SHOULD BE HEALTHY AND UP-TO-DATE ON ALL VETERINARY RECOMMENDED VACCINES. If your animal is NOT friendly AND well-behaved, LEAVE THEM AT HOME! Be sure to groom your pet and be prepared to "show off" your pet in the ring. You can utilize this opportunity to show off your pet’s special talents and obedience. Must have pet’s name on registration form. If water bowls are not provided for your pet, your pet will be disqualified and will need to be taken home. This year, we will again have a "Pet Photo" contest with the following categories for elementary, junior high and senior high divisions: dog, cat, bird, fish, rabbit and any other pet.

There will be a black and white and color photo division for each of these pet categories. Each 4-H’er may enter a set of only five (5) photos of each different type of animal. Example: 5 pictures of cats on 1 poster, 5 pictures of dogs on 1 poster, etc. If more than 5 photos for each animal are turned in, that photo set will be disqualified. Your photos for each pet are to be mounted on a separate half sheet of poster board with captions beneath the photos. On the back of the poster give your name, age, grade, and club. Also add what your pet is (type of dog, cat, fish, rabbit, etc.), name of your pet(s), describe its color, its size (how tall, how much it weighs, etc.) and any other information you would like to add. Be creative with your photos. Pets can be dressed in a cute costume, doing tricks, etc. No cropped or cut pictures will be allowed – pictures must be no larger than 4" X 6". You may use photos printed from your computer on photo paper. The photos of your pet(s) are to be brought to the field day and they will be judged either during or after the activities for the day. Clover Chatter

During the April and May 4-H meetings, we discussed the name of our 4-H newsletter, Clover Chatter. Some like the name and some think that it’s time for a change. I was taking e-mail suggestions for a new name throughout the summer. We had planned to post those suggestions on the webpage and in the September 2009 Clover Chatter, but as of now, there are no suggestions. We would like to receive suggestions during our September 4-H meetings. These suggestions are due along with our 2010 4-H Achievement Day theme ideas. We will discuss and vote on these items during the 4-H Executive Council meeting set for the afternoon of October 26, 2009. You may think that the present name is the best name; we will have the opportunity to vote to leave the name as is. Remember that the 4-H program is yours. I am always open to your suggestions that will help improve what we do to make the Beauregard 4-H program the best it can be. We may need to do new things and we may need to put a different spin on what has always been done.

You may have ideas for a certain topic area for our 4-H Field Days. You may have an idea to change the format of these Field Days that will be more enjoyable and educational than they have been. I am in search of 4-H members, parents, grandparents or interested volunteers who want to share their knowledge and conduct a workshop during one of our upcoming educational Field Days. If you are interested or know someone who is interested in conducting this type of activity, please contact me, Michael LaVergne, at the Beauregard 4-H office at (337) 463-7006.

4-H Club Colors

The National 4-H club colors are green and white. The white background of the 4-H flag symbolizes purity. The green of the 4-H emblem represents nature’s most common color in the great outdoors and also symbolizes youth, life and growth.
