Beauregard Parish Master Gardeners and Agent Graduate

[Image: Master Gardeners]Several Beauregard Parish Master Gardeners, along with the local county agent, recently completed two days of training at the Rapides Parish LSU AgCenter Extension Office on starting and maintaining a community garden. Plans are under way to provide the DeRidder area with community gardens.

The original idea for a community garden in DeRidder came from a meeting with Mayor Ron Roberts. He envisioned several community gardens where citizens could help raise their own vegetables. This plan is still on the table, and several of the Beauregard Parish Master Gardeners attended a training class in Rapides Parish, given by LSUAgcenter, that provided two days of instruction on how to start and maintain a community garden.

Because Community Gardening is a new endeavor, and the local Master Gardeners are newly organized, the aspiration is to start one community garden. Master Gardener Jimmy Earl Cooley and LSU AgCenter county agent Keith Hawkins visited several sites in and around DeRidder. A site has not yet been selected--spring 2010 is the tentative date to establish the garden.

Cooley is recruiting interested citizens for both assistance and donations. The city of DeRidder is also a partner, and some local businesses have conveyed a desire to support this project. Cooley said he thinks that, "There will be a community garden where interested citizens can volunteer to be taught how to grow their own vegetables. The garden will be managed and maintained by the volunteers, once they are trained by the Master Gardeners. "
