DESIGN-A-T-SHIRT CONTEST
Our annual Design-A-T-Shirt Contest has just begun. Think up and draw out as many ideas and phrases for a new 4-H T-Shirt. Show your 4-H spirit to the whole parish and submit each idea on a separate sheet of paper with your name and school written on the back. Entries must be turned in to our office by Wednesday, December 16, at 4:00 p.m. *100 CLOVER BUCKS for each
entry!*
HONEY BEE ESSAY CONTEST
The above title is the topic for this year’s Honey Bee Essay Contest. The essay is due February 5, 2010, by 4:00 p.m. in our 4-H office. The contest is open to active Louisiana 4-H Club members only. State winners will receive a CASH PRIZE, award plaque, and an invitation to attend the State Beekeepers Meeting! For a complete set of rules and an entry form, please call our office at 965-2326. A sample of the judges’ scoring sheet is also available.
SHOOTING SPORTS REGISTRATION MEETING
Are you interested in learning more about the areas of BB gun, shotgun, muzzle loading, archery or rifle? If you want to find out all there is to know about the Bossier Parish Shooting Sports program, then attend our meeting on Tuesday, November 10, 6:00 p.m., Bossier Instructional Center (next to Airline High). A parent MUST attend this meeting with their child(ren). Registration fees will be due at this meeting. Call the Bossier Parish 4-H office (965-2326) to get your name on the list for attending this meeting.
CHICK-FIL-A & CLOVERS’ NIGHT OUT
The Bossier City Chick-fil-A store, at I-220 and Airline Drive, will be partnering with Bossier Parish 4-H in a one night fundraiser. Members are encouraged to make purchases in the name of 4-H between the hours of 5:00-8:00 p.m. on November 19, 2009. 4-H Agents, Jeannie Crnkovic and Troy Menard, will be on location giving 500 CLOVER BUCKS to all participating members.
AWARD APPLICATIONS
The Key Club Award and Award of Excellence applications are available in the 4-H office.
The 4-H Key Club Award in Louisiana gives recognition to 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and in their parish. The object of the program is to encourage project growth. Requirements are: *16 years of age by January 1 of the year application is made. *Three (3) years of 4-H club work including award year. *Completed (1) year of active Junior Leadership work excluding award year. *Score 140 pts. on the application and score cards.
The 4-H Award of Excellence is for junior members who have shown outstanding membership and leadership abilities. This award is a gold finished medallion and certificate. Requirements are: *Under 14 years of age by January 1 of the club year application is made. *At least two years of 4-H club work including award year. *Score at least 100 points on the application. Both applications are due in the 4-H office on January 8, 2010.
HOPE FOR HEROES
The local chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, an international sorority, is teaming up with Bossier Parish 4-H in the project titled above. This gives us an opportunity to show appreciation toward military men and women for their jobs well done! We are collecting the following items to be donated to the VA Medical Center in Shreveport and to be sent to our troops overseas: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, shave cream, razors, denture cleaner/cream, deodorant, Chap Stick, body wash, sun block, liquid hand sanitizer, shampoo, etc. Food items: beef jerky, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, granola bars, pop-tarts, cookies, etc. No glass or aerosol cans, please. Our 4-H agents will pick-up these items during the first week of December. Earn 100 CLOVER BUCKS per item donated!
ADOPT-A-COTTAGE
We need your help! Our service project for December is the Adopt-A-Cottage at the Northwest Louisiana Developmental Center. We will collect Christmas present donations from the school clubs on December 15 and wrap them up for residents of the Center, all in the spirit of giving. Contact Ms. Jeannie if your club is interested.
FASHION CAMP
For ages 10-13, our “SEW” Much Fun in a Winter Wonderland Camp will be held at Camp Grant Walker, January 23-24, 2010. Bossier may send 2, 4-H members and the cost is $55-$65 each. They will learn sewing terms, sewing machine use, pattern layout, and more! Also, they will bring home many fun and useable items sewn by them! These campers must have a volunteer chaperone to accompany them at camp. The same fee applies and the volunteer will have to be trained for Overnight Chaperoning. Call our office for details at 965-2326.
CLOVER BUDS
We signed up 21 new members at our October registration meeting! We are still accepting applications for ages 5-8 years for this 4-H based program. Our next meeting will be November 12, 6 p.m., at Bellaire Elementary, 1310 Bellaire Blvd, Bossier City. Call Christi Turner at 572-4062 or email her at christi@csmcpa.com for all the details on this exciting new group!
HORNETS BASKETBALL
Load the charter bus to New Orleans, February 19, 2010. For $75 per person, you will receive round-trip transportation, and a game ticket. 4-H youth will be able to participate in pregame or half-time court activities. Space is limited. PECAN/POULTRY COOKERY CONTEST
When: December 5, 2009 Where: W.T. Lewis Elementary, 4701 Modica Lott Rd.
Time: Registration, 9:30–10:00 am
Please read all the rules!
1. Contestants may enter only one (1) dish in each division.(2 dishes total)
2. The dish must be prepared the night before & chilled in refrigerator.
3. Dish must be transported to the contest on ice, in an ice chest.
4. The contestant must be a Bossier Parish 4-H club member.
5. All contests are open to all age groups and all ages will compete together.
Contestants should bring a dish prepared by them to the contest. A copy of the recipe must accompany the dish. The required recipe form may be picked-up from your club leader. The recipe must make only one standard dish. The ENTIRE dish must be exhibited at the contest, i.e. if the cookie recipe yields 3 dozen, then 3 dozen cookies must be displayed for the contest. Anything used to enhance the appearance of the dish must be in or on the serving container.
**DISHES NOT CHILLED & TRANSPORTED ON ICE IN AN ICE CHEST WILL BE DISQUALIFIED
~Microwave Ovens will be available for judges to reheat foods~
Division Rules: You may enter only 1 dish in each division -- Each 1st place dish will compete at the Area Cookery Contest in Natchitoches, LA.
PECANS: (minimum of ½ cup pecans must be used; may be whole, chopped, halves or pieces)

-Other (may include a main dish, salad, appetizer, etc. but NOT a dessert item)
POULTRY: Chicken: (contains minimum of 2 pounds bone-in chicken or 1 pound deboned chicken - may include chicken nuggets, chicken strips, canned chicken, etc.)
Other Poultry Meat: (contains minimum of 2 pounds bone-in or 1 pound deboned meat from a bird other than chicken. Examples: turkey, duck, quail, dove, emu, ostrich, pheasant, pigeon, guinea, grouse)

STATE FAIR POULTRY POSTER CONTEST
A BIG round of applause goes out to our Bossier Parish 4-H member, Brent Wroblewski, who placed 8th in the Poultry Poster Contest. Ribbons were awarded to the top 10 place winners out of 32 entries. Great job, Brent!
STATE FAIR POULTRY JUDGING AWARDS
Travis Simmons was awarded a 1st place ribbon and his brother, Clayton, received a 7th place ribbon for judging the poultry show at the State Fair. Outstanding job, you guys!
