PARISH LIVESTOCK SHOW
The Bossier Parish Livestock Show will be held at the State Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 26th. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the show will start at 9:30 am. Even if you do not have livestock to show, make plans to come out and watch your fellow 4-H’ers, and have some fun. Stay for the pet show afterwards!
PET SHOW
2:00 PM, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH
PET SHOW AT THE STATE FAIRGROUNDS
Smallest, Largest, Most Unusual, Best Groomed, Best Trick, Softest Fur, and Best Costume are the 7 categories of choice in which you may enter your pet(s) at $3 per category. Your pet must be domestic, not wild life. NO SNAKES! Current shots for dogs and cats must be verified by bringing current health papers from your vet. All animals must arrive in a cage or on a leash and kept contained throughout the show. Trophies will be awarded for 1st place and ribbons will be awarded for 2nd through 5th places. Ask your leader for details or call the 4-H office at 965-2326.
4-H LEADER TRAINING
Attention all Bossier Parish Club Leaders! You are invited to attend the Parish 4-H Leaders’ Training:

OFFICER TRAINING
"I now call this meeting to order." Which officer at your 4- H club meeting will be saying this at the beginning of each of your meetings? If you have been elected to an office and are not sure what your duties are, then make plans to join us for the Bossier Parish 4-H Officer Training to be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 from 3:45pm until 4:45pm at Kerr Elementary (1700 Airline Drive) in the library. We hope to see you there!
TALENT SHOW TRY-OUTS
Is your talent vocal, dance, instrumental, or other? Start practicing now for the annual 4-H talent show try-outs. Make plans to attend on Tuesday, Oct. 6th, at Kerr Elem. from 4:45- 6:00pm in the multi-purpose room. The time limit is 7 minutes and the maximum group size is 8 people. Each school may enter one finalist for each division and the top three winners will compete with other parishes at the State Fair Talent Show on Oct. 24th, at 9:00am.

STATE FAIR COMPETITIVE EVENTS
Did you know, you can win prize money and ribbons for your special craft items? Sewing, Knitting, Arts & Crafts, Photography, and MANY MORE types of items, made this year, will be accepted for competition. Once the fair opens, you will be able to visit the Agricultural Bldg. to view your items and see if you have won a ribbon! If you’re interested in entering items at the State Fair of Louisiana, go to the following website for information: www.statefairoflouisiana.com . On the first page, click on "Competitive Exhibits", second page "Junior" (for specific rules and categories), and also on "Entry Forms" (at top of 1st page) to download the form required for identifying your entries. Entries will be accepted at the Agricultural Building (located on the State Fair of Louisiana Fairgrounds) on Sunday, October 18th, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and again on Monday the 19th, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. After the fair is over, your items may be picked up at the same location on Monday, November 9th, 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. The staff will need extra time to finalize the check-out procedure on all items, so NO EARLY pick-ups please!
STATE FAIR POULTRY POSTER CONTEST
Would you like to win $20, $15, or $10? Learn more about poultry and eggs and their importance to healthy bodies. Demonstrate communication skills by drawing a billboard encouraging or promoting the consumption of poultry or eggs. Use a 22"x28" poster board to illustrate a billboard design. This contest is open to all 4-H and FFA members, grades 4th -12th, with three age divisions. To enter and a chance to win one of the cash prizes, go online and type in www.statefairoflouisiana.com. Click on Livestock, then Junior Division, then Poultry Poster Contest for the complete rules. Your poster and an entry form are due on October 24, 2009 at the State Fair Poultry Barn or State Fair Office by noon.

RULES & REGULATIONS
The contest is open to all youth 9-18 years of age. Youth wanting to compete must pre-register byWednesday, October 21, 2009 and submit a $5.00 registration fee to:

Divisions will be determined by the age the day of the contest.
The order of fire will be 4 shots standing, 4 shots prone, 4 shots sitting, and 4 shots kneeling.
Targets and ammunition will be provided. Targets will be NRA-AR4/10 fired at 5 meters.
Guns WILL BE provided. Slings may be used in all positions with exception of standing. No telescopic sights may be used. Iron
sites only. External modifications may be limited to rear sights only. No internal modifications may be made. Total weight limit may not exceed six pounds. Once fire has begun, there will be no firing off range for safety reasons.
AWARDS
The top three shooters in each division will be recognized. 75% of the entry fees will be jackpotted back with an additional $75.00 per division added money to be divided among the top 3 shooters.

OUTDOOR SKILLS PROGRAM
We are working on putting together our Outdoor Skills program for the new 4-H year. This program can offer archery, BB gun, ATV safety, nature identification, .22 rifle, black powder, and more, provided we have the required, certified instructors. If you know of an adult that is certified or is willing to attend classes for certification in any of the above sports, please have them contact our office at 965-2326.

Northwest Shotgun League
Tournament September 12th, 8:00am at the Shreveport Gun Club. Open to shooters that have been through the basic training course. The next shoot will be October 10th. Call Joe Barrett for more information @ 318-357-2224
NATIONAL 4-H WEEK "CELEBRATE 4-H"
October 5-9, 2009
Celebrate 4-H by joining your school or special interest club. Then, ask your friends to join 4-H, too! 4-H has a year full of events that are geared to all age groups. Do you like to cook; we have a contest for that. Do you like to camp; we have camping events you can attend. Do you like community service; we have monthly projects that need your help and donations. Do you like to build things; enter our Birdhouse Contest. If that isn’t enough, then select your project book, complete it, and turn it in by the spring deadline for a chance to win an award at Awards Night in May 2010. We look forward to you being a part of Bossier Parish 4-H!
BOSSIER PARISH 4-H QUIZ TEAMS
Mr. Troy and Ms. Jeannie are looking for a few ambitious 4-H members who would like to participate in the Nutrition or Livestock Quiz Bowl. These competitions will be held on October 24th, at the State Fair of Louisiana.
They will teach you all you need to know in order to answer questions against other parish teams. Practice dates will be announced once teams are established. Call today for sign-up! 965-2326.
CLOVER BUDS
Great news! Bossier Parish 4-H is putting together a CLOVER BUDS CLUB. This 4-H based group will be open to kids ages 5-8 and to the first 100, dues paid, enrollers. Our leaders are Gail Smith and Christi Turner. Ms. Gail is a teacher at Waller Elementary and the Waller 4-H Leader. Ms. Christi is a former 4-H’er, Fashion Board Leader, and Jr. Leadership volunteer. The first meeting in October (TBA) will be held at Waller Elementary with monthly meetings rotating locations to accommodate all parish members. The group needs co-sponsors and volunteers! MDA SHAMROCKS
last March, our 4-H members participated in raising funds for MDA. 11 Clubs put their best foot forward and sold Shamrocks totaling $7,021! That exceeds last year’s total by $516! Way to go Bossier 4-H! The top 3 selling clubs were: Princeton Elementary $1,527

Last year’s annual PENNY DRIVE brought in $1,496.61!
These copper coins will help our Bossier Parish 4-H by paying for much needed program materials and to help send a few kids to summer camp. Top donating clubs were:

2009 4-H UNIVERSITY RESULTS
CONGRATULATIONS to the 16 Bossier 4-H’ers who participated in the 2009 4-H University held on the LSU Baton Rouge campus, June 23rd- 26th. There were 38 competitive contests and 8 non-competitive Clover College tracts this year. Our 4-H’ers who took home honors were:

Horse Show Results
The 4-H District Horse Show was held in June at the Double R Arena in Stonewall, LA. There were 42 competitive classes with just over 30 participants. The Bossier Parish 4-H’ers who took home honors were:

Beef Poster Winners
All 4-H’ers have an opportunity to participate in the annual Beef & Dairy Poster Contests each February. The contests’ rules are published in our January newsletter. Last February, we collected several posters from many of our Bossier clubs. Judges were brought into our office and a winner from each division was selected. We submitted these winning posters to the State contest. For the first time, Bossier Parish placed in the State contest! GRAZING PROJECT WINNER
Tyler Harrell competed in the 2008-2009 Jr. Beef Grazing Project. In this project, 3 calves are raised on rye grass and mineral supplements. There are 2 weigh-ins; one at the beginning of the project and one after. The group of calves with the best daily weight gain, during the project, wins for their parish. Congratulations, Tyler, on your win for Bossier Parish!
