2008 National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Brandon Guillory, Calcasieu Parish 4-H’er, took first place in the National 4-H Chicken Barbecue Demonstration contest held here Nov. 19-20.

Brandon was judged on his barbecue techniques, the sensory evaluation of the finished barbecue and his presentation skills in which he gave an illustrated talk on poultry, according to LSU AgCenter poultry professor Dr. Theresia Lavergne.

The 4-H’er won a gold pin and a $500 savings bond. Brandon was coached by LSU AgCenter 4‑H agent Nancy Cronan of Calcasieu Parish.

In all, 11 4-H’ers represented Louisiana at the conference held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition.

The Louisiana 4-H poultry judging team placed third in the national 4-H poultry judging contest. Also, the poultry judging team placed third in market poultry judging and third in egg production judging.

Kris Simon (Lafayette Parish) was the seventh high individual in the overall contest and the fourth high individual in market poultry judging. Katelyn Provost (Lafayette Parish) was the 15th high individual in the overall contest. Daniel Sykes (Livingston Parish) was the 17th high individual in the overall contest. Karl Simon (Lafayette Parish) was the fourth member of the team.

The team was coached by LSU AgCenter 4‑H agent Charles Hebert of Lafayette Parish and LSU AgCenter 4-H Youth Development instructor David Boldt.

Melissa Berthelot (St. John Parish) placed sixth in the National 4-H Egg Preparation Demonstration contest. Melissa was judged on her presentation skills and on the dish she prepared (ham and cheese quiche). She won a silver pin and a $100 savings bond. Melissa was coached by LSU AgCenter assistant agent Kelly Camp of St. John Parish.

Kristen Davis (Calcasieu Parish) placed seventh in the National 4-H Turkey Barbecue contest. Kristen was judged on her barbecue techniques, the sensory evaluation of the finished barbecue and on her presentation skills in which she gave an illustrated talk on turkeys. She won a bronze pin and a $100 savings bond. Kristen also was coached Cronan.

The Louisiana 4-H Avian Bowl team placed seventh in the national avian bowl contest. The team members were Cody Lowery, Brittany Babineaux, Kelsey Wilkinson and Jessica Engolio, all of Ascension Parish. The team was coached by volunteer Dr. Katherine Beier of Ascension Parish.
