Holiday Foods Festival

Contests Judging / Educational Activities: 9:30 a.m.

Awards Presentation: 11:30 a.m.

Requirements
  • All Caldwell 4-H members are eligible to compete.
  • Dishes must be already prepared and ready to serve. All dishes must be chilled and transported in an insulated ice chest with ice. Dishes not properly chilled will be disqualified. This does not include dishes that would not normally be refrigerated - cakes, cookes, etc.
  • Each 4-H'er may enter 1 dish per category; however, a maximum of 2 dishes per 4-H'er may be entered at the Area Contest.
  • Recipes need to be written or typed on the recipe form available at the 4-H office.
  • Bring 2 copies of your recipe to the contest.
  • Each participant is expected to call the 4-H office at 649-2663 by Wednesday, November 11 to pre-register for the contest.
  • Please bring at least 1 canned food item that will be donated to a food pantry at a local church.
Awards:
Every participant will receive a ribbon. Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. All first place dishes will compete for Best of Show. First place winners will be eligible to compete in the Area Cookery contest during the 4-H Food and Fitness Expo.

Dish Categories


Rice:
Dish must contain at least one cup of uncooked or two cups of cooked white or brown rice. If contestant is using rice bran instead of rice, the recipe must contain at least 1/4 cup of rice bran. Wild rice is acceptable as long as there are two cups of cooked white or brown rice also included in the dish. Any type of rice dish may be entered.

Pecan: Dish must contain at least one cup of pecans. Any type of pecan dish may be entered.

Sweet Potato: Dish must contain a minimum of one cup of fresh, canned or frozen sweet potatoes. Any type of sweet potato dish may be entered.

Egg: Dish must utilize a minimum of four (4) eggs. This can be four whites, four yolks or four whole eggs. No raw eggs will be allowed in the final product. The recipe with four eggs must make only one standard size dish. For example, a recipe with four eggs that makes two pies of standard size will not qualify. Any type of egg dish may be entered.

Chicken: Dish must contain a minimum of 2 pounds bone-in or 1 pound boneless chicken meat. Any type of chicken dish may be entered.

Catfish: The dish must use a minimum of 1 cup (8 ounces) of catfish. Please use farm-raised Louisiana catfish. Any type of catfish dish may be entered.

Beef: The dish must contain a minimum of 1 pound boneless beef or 2 pounds bone-in beef. All beef should be cooked until gray in color, not pink and juices run clear. Any type of beef dish may be entered.

Corn: Dish must contain a minimum of 1 cup (8 ounces) of corn products such as corn meal, grits, hominy corn, fresh, frozen or canned corn. Any type of corn dish may be entered.


Display Contest

  1. Each 4-H'er may submit one display board. All boards compete against each other. The first place board will be used for display in parish and area events.
  2. Display size will be 48" x 36". Headers will be allowed on top of the boards.
  3. All displays must contain at least one 4-H clover (at least 3" x 3") prominently placed on the board.
  4. Contestant's name and parish must be placed on the back of the display - bottom left hand corner.
  5. All information must be attached to the display board (no items on the table top; no tablecloths.) No items attached to the board more than 1/4 inch thick.
  6. The topic for the displays will be "A Healthier You." Displays should focus on "My Pyramid" and finding a balance between food and physical activity. Information can be found at MyPyramid.gov
  7. Each participant is expected to call the 4-H office at 649-2663 by Wednesday, November 11 to pre-register for the contest.
