The LSU AgCenter and Caldwell Cattlemen's Association held a meeting addressing spring and summer weed identification and control that was attended by 21 producers.
Ten wildlife hunters learned how to establish and maintain deer plots for big game hunting by soil sampling, fertilizing and selecting the appropriate forage for plots.
Five 4-H'ers exhibited their 4-H livestock animals during the Louisiana State Fair in Shreveport where they learned about breeds of different animals including beef and goats.
In preparation for the spring livestock shows, one beef project and two new goat project members learned about animal selection and nutrition for their 4-H projects.
4-H
Approximately 275 children visited the 4-H Children's Tent and Mini-farm during the Louisiana Art and Folk Festival. 4-H Junior Leaders and members of the 4-H Fashion, Food and Fitness Club were there to assist the children who visited the 4-H area.
4-H agent Sandra Russell presented a 4-H program update for the 2008-09 club year to the Caldwell Parish School Board. Fashion, Food and Fitness Club members Krista Weems and Cutter Montpelier distributed fruit baskets to Superintendent John Sartin and school board members in appreciation for their support of the Caldwell Parish 4-H program.
Members of the Fashion, Food and Fitness Club along with 4-H leaders Denise Kelly and Judith McKee and 4-H agent Sandra Russell took a field trip to the Outdoor Wilderness Learning Center and the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home. 4-H'ers participated in human maze activities at the OWL Center that promoted leadership and team building skills and visited the Children's Home to learn more about the facility and its services and to present cameras and photo books to the youth who live at the facility.
Ninety-three dishes and five displays were entered during the 2008 Holiday Foods Festival. Forty-nine 4-H'ers participated in the contest and a nutrition program presented by FNP educator Tammy Tarver. First place winners will participate in the Area Commodity Cookery in Winnsboro.
Junior Leaders visited residents at the Haven Nursing Home and gave them Christmas ornaments they made prior to the event.
4-H agent Sandra Russell presented a program about job readiness to students in the GED program at the Caldwell Parish High School.
4-H Junior Leader Club members began their service learning project "Keeping Our Kids Safe". Members are teaching youth in after-school settings about internet and food safety.
4-H'er Blake Sanford appeared on KNOE TV 8's "What's Cookin'?" with Stacy Thorton. Blake was eligible to appear on the show and prepare a dish after winning "Best of Show" at the Holiday Foods Festival.
During 4-H club meetings, members learned about the six pillars of character and how to apply those pillars in everyday life. They also learned how to be trustworthy and respectful in the work place.
Family Nutrition Program
Members Leah Thompson and Krista Weems helped nutrition educator Tammy Tarver with a food demonstration during a Fashion, Food and Fitness Club meeting focusing on healthy snacks and food safety.
Over 200 students at the Caldwell Parish Junior High School participated in food safety, hand washing and MyPyramid nutrition programs. During these lessons, students received a food journal they completed for one week to see what kind of eating habits they had.
Twenty-seven parents participated in food safety, hand washing and MyPyramid classes during Caldwell Head Start parent meetings.
Thirty students in Caldwell Parish High School's GED prep class learned about food safety and MyPyramid.
Caldwell Preschool, Head Start, Union Central kindergarten and first grade and Columbia kindergarten and second grade students were presented nutrition programs on food safety, hand washing and MyPyramid's grain, vegetable and fruit groups.
