Second Quarter 2009

Agriculture

  • Planted a corn variety plot with a local producer to examine yields at the end of the growing season.
  • Presented a soil erosion program to fifth-graders during Forestry Awareness Day.
  • Assisted 40 homeowners with insect and disease identification, fertilizer recommendations and weed control in home lawns and gardens.
  • Assisted 10 hay and forage producers with fertilizer and lime recommendations.
  • Assisted two clients in starting a small greenhouse business in Caldwell Parish that will deal with herbs and potted plants.

4-H

Approximately 300 elementary 4-H members learned how to be caring and respectful and approximately 100 junior high and high school 4-H members learned how to make ethical decisions in the workplace after attending 4-H cCub meetings.

Six Caldwell 4-H'ers competed in this year's State Ambassador Talk contest held on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge where they presented illustrated talks on Louisiana commodities.

4-H agent Sandra Russell attended the 2009 Strengthening Extension Advisory Leaders conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the conference, extension educators learned about new methods in volunteerism and how to build stronger advisory groups, understand the changing demographics of volunteers and communicate the value of volunteer leaders.

Over 20 youth from Caldwell, Franklin and Ouachita parishes participated in a scavenger hunt at Pecanland Mall. 4-H agent Sandra Russell designed the activity to teach 4-H'ers about being wise consumers when shopping and purchasing clothing.

Approximately 30 4-H'ers attended the 4-H Fishing Clinic where they had the opportunity to compete in the "Most Fish Caught" and "Biggest Fish Caught" contests.

Nine youth in grades 8 to 12 and agents Sandra Russell and Jim McCann attended 4-H University held June 23-26 on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Congratulations to Jade Pilcher for winning a blue ribbon in the Fashion Revue Contest.

4-H Junior Leaders provided leadership to teachers and students who attended the Forestry Awareness Day, Farm Safety Day and Health Awareness Day.

The 4-H Fashion, Food and Fitness Club Relay for Life team consisted of seventeen 4-H'ers, three volunteer leaders and 4-H agent Sandra Russell. The 4-H FFF team raised $1,273.09 for the American Cancer Society prior to and during the Relay for Life event.

Agents Sandra Russell and Jim McCann recognized and awarded numerous 4-H'ers and 4-H leaders during the annual 4-H Awards Night.

Approximately 30 Caldwell 4-H'ers and volunteer leaders along with 4-H agent Sandra Russell attended this year's 4-H Day at the Capitol in Baton Rouge on June 3. 4-H'ers had the opportunity to tour our state capitol and visit with Sen. Neil Riser and Rep. Noble Ellington.

Seventy 4-H'ers and four 4-H Junior Leaders along with 4-H volunteer leader Darla McKee and agents Jim McCann and Sandra Russell attended 4-H Camp May 25-29 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock. While at camp, 4-H'ers participated in a variety of fun and educational activities including outdoor skills, science, etiquette, water safety and leadership.

Congratulations to Alicia Foy for winning second place in the 2009 State Draw-a-Dairy Billboard contest. Alicia was awarded $50 for being a state winner in this contest.

Family Nutrition Program

During Monday Movers, 41 students participated in "Gardening in a Glove," a nutrition lesson designed to get kids in the garden to grow healthy fruit and vegetables to eat. Caldwell Pre-school, Head Start and Union Central's kindergarteners and first-grader learned how to grow a "Garden in a Cup." This lesson also promotes kids in the garden. After the lesson students enjoyed a slice of watermelon.

The Caldwell parish high school GED prep and Adult Education students participated in a food demonstration of apple coleslaw after the nutrition lesson,"Smart Choices: Inside the Fruit and Vegetable Groups." Twenty-eight students participated in these lessons.

Thirty-three seniors at the Council on Aging received the nutrition lesson "Give Your Heart a Break" from the Smart Choices curriculum. A five fruit salad was made for a food demonstration.
