Three hay producers were assisted with fertilizer and lime requirements in order for them to increase profits in their forage operations.
Assisted five agricultural producers in understanding the Louisiana Agriculture and Forestry Loan program developed to help producers who sustained losses due to hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
Fifteen Caldwell parish school personnel learned how to safely apply pesticides during a pesticide safety meeting.
Two producers were assisted in stocking and managing their farm recreational ponds. Maintaining the right stocking ratio is very important when trying to raise certain types of fish.
Four leaders were assisted in receiving training in the Outdoor Skills Project. This 4-H project enhances adult and youth skills in hunting, shot gun, archery and rifle.
Twenty-five 4-H youth participated in the Caldwell Parish Livestock Show. Nutrition, competition, responsibility and showmanship were the focus of this livestock show.
4-H
Three 4-H portfolios were submitted by Tyler Duchesne and Korey Burns for competition in the 4-H Records Only Contest. Both members were blue ribbon winners in this statewide event.
Four Caldwell 4-H'ers attended the Fashion, Food and Fitness Club Reward Trip to the Boardwalk in Shreveport. Hannah Travis, Nealy McCoy, Bailey Coates and Hannah McKee were eligible to attend the trip after meeting established criteria during the 2008-2009 year in the Fashion, Food and Fitness Club.
The Northeast Area Leader Forum was held on September 23. This annual event is held to give 4-H volunteer leaders the opportunity to attend professional development sessions taught by 4-H Youth Development agents. 4-H volunteer leaders attending this year's training were Danyelle Guerrero, Donna Rollins, Portia Cassels, Leslie Crain, Randi Harris, Denise Kelly and agents Jim McCann and Sandra Russell.
4-H Club enrollment meetings were held in September. All 14 Caldwell Parish 4-H Clubs learned about 4-H and what to expect for the 2009-2010 club year. The 4-H Fashion, Food and Fitness Club and the 4-H Junior Leader Club enrollment meetings were also held. Members learned about these after-school clubs, the community service and service learning projects and activities for the 2009-2010 club year.
4-H agent Sandra Russell held trainings for newly elected 4-H officers to inform them of their roles and responsibilities as 4-H club officers.
Family Consumer Science
LSU AgCenter family and consumer sciences agent Danna Gillett from Richland Parish presented four sessions of the PATHWAYS parenting education program to parents who were attempting to regain custody of their adolescent daugther.
Family Nutrition Program
The Caldwell Council on Aging received educational programs from the Smart Choices curriculum, which included "Dairy and Calcium," "Low Fat Protein Selection" and "It Doesn't Have to be Fresh to be Good for You." Clients also watched a food demonstration that included "Chicken Pasta Salad" and "Fresh Apple Cake." After the demonstration everyone enjoyed sampling the food.
Students from Head Start and the Pre-Kindergarten Center, Union Central and Columbia elementary schools and the high school GED preparation classes learned about germs and proper hand washing techniques during educational programs held in August and September.
Fifty-three students participated in the Caldwell Parish P.E. Sports Camp on July 2. During the camp, students learned to "Rethink Your Drink," which taught the importance of looking at the nutrition label on different types of bottled beverages to see what ingredients are in the beverages. Students also learned how to make a healthy fruit slush at home.
