New Rules for 2009 - 2010
Safety Presentations - All members need to be at practice by the time scheduled. Before every practice there will be a safety presentation that you have to attend to be able to shoot at practice. If you get to practice late and miss the presentation, you will not be allowed to shoot. So make sure and get to practice early.
Shotgun Shells - This year we will not be supplying any ammunition. You will have to bring your own ammunition. There will be no cost for practice.
Shell Bags - Shell bags are MANDATORY. We have placed an order for 24 shell bags. All members (Juniors and Seniors) will not be able to practice without a shell belt. You will not be allowed to put shells in your pockets or carry them in the box.
Also, the club has guns available for anyone to shoot at practice or 4-H competitions. Our program needs volunteers to assist with practice times so that we can get things up and running in preparation for the State Competition. The 4-H Shooting Sports Training will be held on October 3, 2009, at the LSU AgCenter in Calcasieu Parish. Anyone interested in the training can contact the Cameron 4-H office at 337-905-1318 to sign up for the classes.
Objective of Program
By taking part in the program, youth can learn life skills such as decision making, responsibility and communication. In addition, youth will gain an understanding of the importance of safety when using firearms and hunting equipment. The program teaches youth about hunting ethics and wildlife management tips.
Age Requirement
Program participants must be a 4-H Club member and be between 9 and 18 years old as of January 1 of the current school year. Youth must join the club at their school. If a school does not have a club, they can join the Cameron Member at Large Club.
Club Activity Days
The shooting sports club meets at least once a month from October through May. The club days are usually on the weekend.
Southern Regional - Lake Charles Gun Club - April 23-25, 2010
State Shoot - Shreveport - May 7-9, 2010
Seniors can qualify for national competition.
Disciplines
4-H'ers can concentrate on one of five disciplines: Rifle (BB gun, Air Rifle, .22 Rifle), Archery, (recurve and compound), Shotgun, Muzzleloader and Hunting Skills.
Volunteer Instructors
The shooting sports program is run strictly by volunteer support. Instructors go through a certification process to teach at the parish level. We are always looking for volunteers.
For more information on joining 4-H and the shooting sports program or becoming a volunteer, please call (337) 905-1318.
The 4-H Shooting Sports program has gained strength over the past years. This year we had a record number of shooters involved in the program.
Congratulations to all 4-H'ers who competed in the parish, regional, state and national competitions and the 4-H shooting events held throughout the year!
