Canine Connection Information

Club Information: All activities are open for anyone interested in dogs. Club members in grades K-12 will be registered with the 4-H. Adults will be registered with the Louisiana 4-H Volunteer Leader Association. Attendance in all activities, meetings and events is not required for membership.

Project club: Weekly meetings for each level will follow a specific theme. Project records will be kept to determine awards, achievement certifications, training scholarships, and qualifications for advancement.

Training: classes will be broken into 4 week sessions with specific goals. Level 2 will learn basic commands and family fun and fitness activities. Level 2 lessons will include handling skills and introductory training for competition in obedience, agility, rally, and confirmation.

Service Club: Meeting dates TBA will include a special theme with information, guest speakers, demonstrations, and activities.

Activities: Throughout the year, special events and activities will include craft projects, seminars, field trips, and visits to dog parks.

Community Service: Special projects and volunteer opportunities will be coordinated with local dog clubs and organizations including: pet therapy and education; help with dog shows and trials; and support for shelters and rescue groups.

Events:Participation will be encouraged in special canine events and community dog activities. A few of the special events include: CAAWS Mystic Krewe of Mutts Mardi Gras Parade, LSU Vet School Open House, and BREC Pets and Pals Day.

Competition:

USDAA Junior Handler Program: for children eighteen years of age and younger. It is a set of specialized classes designed to encourage youth involvement in the sport of dog agility as a fun, recreational family sport and to teach responsible pet ownership. The program has been adopted in whole or in part in various state 4-H programs.

AKC Junior Handlers in Companion Events:Obedience, Agility, Rally and Tracking. In these Companion Events, any Junior Handler up to the age of 18 is eligible to compete as a Junior. They exhibit in the regular classes and in the field along with all other exhibitors at the trials and tests.


Level 1: DOG BASICS
This beginning project is aimed at grades 3-5 and includes Cloverbuds for grades k-2. It’s not necessary that you own a dog for this level. Learn basic skills for dog care, heath, grooming, behavior, safety, public etiquette, and to identify dogs by breed and characteristics.

Level 2: DOGGONE FUN & FITNESS
This project is aimed for all beginners and will concentrate on basic commands, safety, socialization, and manners. They will also learn activities to keep you and your dog healthy by learning games, activities, tricks, and sports skills for family fun and fitness.

Level 3: DOG SKILL TRAINING
This advanced project is aimed at grades 6-12 or those who have completed the project requirements for LEVEL 2. They will train their dogs for the Canine Good Citizen test and learn competitive dog handling skills. Additionally, they will investigate responsible breeding, diseases, caring for geriatric dogs, advanced dog training, careers related to dogs, service projects, and emergency preparation.

Level 4: DOG PROJECTS
This level is aimed at grades 6-12 or those who have completed the project requirements for LEVEL 3 and will concentrate on promoting and supporting the 4-H dog program, including volunteering and participating in shows, trials, special service projects, activities and events.

Level 5: DOG SERVICE CLUB
Junior leaders, collegiate members and adult volunteers will be encouraged to assume leadership roles and share what they know by teaching responsible pet ownership, planning community service events, conducting training classes, and volunteering with rescue groups
