East Carroll Parish is primarily an agricultural production area that produces cotton, rice, corn, grain sorghum, soybeans and wheat that are transported from farms to processing facilities. Grain elevators on the Mississippi River, cotton gins/warehouses and nearby rice elevators facilitate movement of agricultural commodities into trade channels.
East Carroll Parish's long growing seasons and well-drained farmland make it possible to produce an abundant variety of crops. East Carroll's farming communities have long thrived and will continue to provide an economic base for potential expansion into related industries, such as food processing and packaging.
According to the LSU AgCenter's "Louisiana Summary of Agriculture and Natural Resources for 2007," East Carroll produced 16,480 acres of cotton; 74,443 acres of corn; 3,065 acres of grain sorghum; 6,002 acres of rice;59,834 acres of soybeans; and 5,364 acres of wheat.
